IBM teams with Swedes for live visualization of datastreams

IBM, Uppsala University, and the Swedish Institute of Space Physics are collaborating on a new project called “IBM InfoSphere Streams” that aims to allow live analytics and visualization of the incoming data stream from various high-frequency radio wave sensors.

Using InfoSphere Streams to analyze data from sensors that track high frequency radio waves, large amounts of data can be captured and analyzed on the fly. Over the next year, the project is expected to perform analytics on at least six gigabytes a second or 21,600 gigabytes per hour – equivalent to processing all the data on the internet, says IBM.

The product allows visual queries on incoming data to extract relevant pieces of information and analyse it visually as it arrives.  This will help predict, for example, the impact of a magnetic storm and help decide if it will impact the earth within the next 18-24 hours.
