GPU Caps Viewer v7.0 has just come out, and with this version comes support for CUDA information on GeForce 8/9/GT200 cards. The GPU Caps Viewer is a great tool for getting some of the incredibly-low-level information about your card, like the number of processors, clock speeds, and limits on registers and threads. With this new version, it’s even more useful for those of us dabbling in GPGPU and CUDA programming.

A press release from Meru announces a new “Video over Wireless” technology specifically designed for streaming High-definition video over 802.11N. While 802.11N definitely has the bandwidth for high-definition video, it lacks the reliability necessary in many situations.
“But high-definition video delivery over wireless is especially challenging because it combines the high bandwidth requirements of heavy data traffic with the delay sensitivity and loss characteristics of voice traffic. And while 802.11n dramatically increases available bandwidth it also increases per-transmission error rates. “
The offering is based around their new “Video Services Module” which combines various prioritization and management strategies into a single tool for easier configuration. It should be available in June as an addon to their existing System Director software for $8000 for 100 nodes.

People that work in Scientific & Information Visualization are constantly being pushed by people unfamiliar with the field to justify why their work is important. Well, a new study from the University of Illinois shows how a good visualization package was essential in identifying the signaling pathways in protein-RNA complexes, keys to the genetic code of all organisms.
“With our visualization software we also can overlap the optimal paths from different proteins and compare networks ” Luthey-Schulten said. “The ability to rapidly visualize and compute the networks will accelerate the design efforts to expand the genetic code to include novel amino acids and allow researchers to apply the technique to much larger systems like the ribosome.”
The software they developed and used is VMD, and they offer it freely on their website.

Quantum3D, makers of the ExpeditionDI military training simulator, have just rev’ed their hardware and now boast a 300% improvement in performance. I can’t find any specifics, but the new system (the “T2e”) is billed as an upgrade to the previous Thermite 1300, which ran on an integrated graphics chip. Swap that out with a new CPU and a new NVidia chip, and that’s easily 300% speedup.

Purdue has created a virtual clean-room with a system like a Mechdyne CAVE for training pharmacists on the real-world environments they’ll be maneuvering. The system is part of Purdue’s Envision Center of Data Perceptualization.
The simulator runs in a multiwall immersive environment at the Envision Center and will work on wall-sized panels and portable display systems, too. The equipment employs 3-D glasses and a wireless controller something like a Nintendo Wii’s to put users in the middle of the virtual world being projected and allow them to navigate and manipulate it. Head-tracking capability adjusts the view as a user looks around, or “walks” through, the environment, which is detailed down to the labels on the medicine bottles. The software also has been modified to run on desktop and laptop computers.

A new press release from AMD and StudioGPU announce a strategic partnership that aims to bring GPGPU accelerated rendering to StudioGPU customers using ATI FirePro cards.
MachStudio(TM) Pro software from StudioGPU and the ATI FireGL(TM) V8650 3D graphics workstation accelerator card will be offered to customers as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) bundle deal from StudioGPU.
