In an attempt to rub out some old preconceptions about the use of ATI (now AMD) hardware with CAD packages, AMD has partnered with popular CAD software provider SolidWorks to ship out preconfigured workstations to some prominent CAD bloggers.
The FirePro team is taking the unusual step of working with a leading 3D CAD vendor – SolidWorks, and sending out workstations with FirePro accelerators to some of their more prominent users/bloggers. The users can evaluate the new cards in their own SolidWorks 2009 workflows relative to any other 3D graphics accelerators they have used.
AMGEN, a biotechnology company, has updated their website with a fantastic interactive area showing some great CG-rendered movies of tumor grown and drug interactions.
Wired.com got an exclusive early look at Amgen’s new website, launched Wednesday, which aims to explain blood-vessel growth, or angiogenesis, and how it relates to cancer. The video above is just the first of 15 produced by Amgen that explore various aspects of angiogenesis and potential ways to control it in beautiful, lifelike videos.
A User in the forums brought this to my attention, and it’s been covered in Wired. Does anyone know some information about who was involved in creating this and the tools used. Anyone know?
Peter Guthrie uses a Canon 1ds mk3 21megapixel camera to create HDR photograph-based skydomes, and has now created a tutorial to show you exactly how to do it.
“Green” computing is becoming all the rage lately, and it looks like AMD/ATI is following NVidia’s lead by revising card designs to remove the additional external power connectors. exPreview has some information on a new RadeonHD4830.
This special HD 4830 coming from Triplex has opted GDDR3 memory, and comes with core/memory clock of 575/900MHz. As we can see, the PCB length is shorter than reference deisgn, and the CrossFire connector is also removed.
This card provides a complete set of DVI, D-Sub and HDMI outputs. Though the 6pin connector is removed, we have no idea yet how much less power consumption it can offer compared with reference model.

Urban city environments are a common asset in videos and games, and designing them is a huge pain for modelers due to the huge amount of detail usually required. PixelActive’s CityScape product automates and simplifies most of the work, and has spread beyond modeling into fields like traffic simulation and city planning. Today they’ve announced version 1.7.
The interest for CityScape in so many industries is amazing. It s not just a tool for building video games anymore. Anyone who wants to build a real or imaginary city should be using CityScape to improve productivity and efficiency.” says Steve Rotenberg PixelActive CEO. “The traffic simulation has been a great benefit to city planners and virtual world developers. The ability to see how changes affect traffic in real-time has been tremendous for them.”"

ZBrush is an incredibly powerful and popular meshing tool, but also a bit daunting for first-time users. 3DM3 have added a set of video tutorials online to show how to create new geometry from existing geometry via Mesh Extraction.
In these 3 video tutorials you will understand how to create a new geometry from the existing geometry using the mesh extraction in ZBrush. These tutorials created by the Pixologic (makers of ZBrush) for the 3D community, so everyone can easily go at advanced level in ZBrush and extract the full potential of the ZBrush. As always you can also download the files in flv format for later viewing.
