Not sure how many Alaskan’s read VizWorld, but if you’re in the area next Wednesday then you might want to sop by the ARSC (Artic Region Supercomputing Center’s) Discovery Lab to see their Virtual Downtown Tour.

The historic Fairbanks tour was created under the direction of UAF/ARSC associate professor Miho Aiko by ARSC student employees Siyuan Wang and Chao Peng. The two recreated the buildings downtown using a software program. The students used photographs from the UAF Rasmuson Library’s Digital Archive, the library’s Alaska archive photograph collection and old maps of downtown. The interactive 3D visualization software allows us to “walk” the historic streets of Fairbanks.

I’ve been to the UAF Campus and seen the Discovery Lab, it’s a pretty impressive immersive display.  Well worth checking out.
