Galaxy Non-reference GTX285 2GB Benchmarked

exPreview has gotten ahold of a Galaxy Non-reference GTX285 and put it through it’s paces.

Featuring the third-party chip to support DisplayPort, this card also offers DVI and S-Video connectivity. The GDDR3 memory chips carry the model number H5RS1H23MFR-N2C which are specified to run at 1200 MHz. Instead of 16MX32bit on most GTX285, Galaxy has chosen 32MX32bit to form memory size of 2GB.

Green Phosphor turns Data into Virtual Environments

CyberTechNews has a story about a product called Glasshouse that turns mundane Database or Spreadsheet data and turns it into an interactive Virtual World (a la Second Life).

Green Phosphor’s product is called Glasshouse, and it is a gateway which can take a database query or a spreadsheet and place a 3D representation of it into a virtual world. Users can see data, and drill into it; re-sort it; explore it interactively – all from within a virtual world. Glasshouse produces graphs which are avatars of the data itself. We’ve tailored the system for the use of biotech companies, specifically for drug discovery and development.

Currently the product is specialized to biomedical, but later on he talks about a future application:

First off I believe that visualization of money in/money out could have turned authorities on to the fishy accounting Enron was up to, and caught them earlier. Perhaps better visualization would have revealed Madoff’s ponzi scheme as well. It’s a matter of seeing the big picture; money must come from somewhere and be tied to intrinsic value at some point.

Lumec updates Free Web-based 3D Viewer

A Press Release from Lumec has been making the rounds, talking about the new release of their 3D Web Viewing application.  Unfortunately, as of this writing, it’s offline with a “try again later”.

“We made the software more intuitive added tons of features and we also incorporated 3D export possibilities from Lumec 3D to various other CAD programs.” Mentions Mr. Jean Giannetti project leader. “Our goal is to give people more than a simple 2D representation of our luminaires we want those involved to have a full 3D visual representation of products in their intended setting before they even begin any project.”"

Visualization in Theatre

SignonSanDiego has an article speaking with some local Theatre Groups, discussing how they’re integrating the internet and social media & visualization technologies into their shows.

Its stories are told with help from an array of huge, Web-like video windows; an onstage blogger; even a social networking site called Xubu that gathers video meditations on the subject of home from people in each community where “Continuous City” is staged. Record your own at Xubu.cc.

picture-2

AWN has a story up about Company X’s new video for RE:GENERATIONS, a remix album features Nat King Cole.

Company X and its production arm, Detox, directed, edited and animated the video, which includes 2D stop-motion, 3D and After Effects. The end result is a multimedia scrapbook that serves as a visual embodiment of the album’s mashed-up tracks, as well as a conceptual homage to Cole’s boundless influence on modern music including hip hop, Latin, reggae, and rock.

University of Fairbanks, AK Virtual Downtour Fairbanks Tour

Not sure how many Alaskan’s read VizWorld, but if you’re in the area next Wednesday then you might want to sop by the ARSC (Artic Region Supercomputing Center’s) Discovery Lab to see their Virtual Downtown Tour.

The historic Fairbanks tour was created under the direction of UAF/ARSC associate professor Miho Aiko by ARSC student employees Siyuan Wang and Chao Peng. The two recreated the buildings downtown using a software program. The students used photographs from the UAF Rasmuson Library’s Digital Archive, the library’s Alaska archive photograph collection and old maps of downtown. The interactive 3D visualization software allows us to “walk” the historic streets of Fairbanks.

I’ve been to the UAF Campus and seen the Discovery Lab, it’s a pretty impressive immersive display.  Well worth checking out.
