Project Descry – Data Visualization in SilverLight

Microsoft has released a “toolset” named Descry to enable data visualization in their SilverLight environment.  If you’re not familiar with SilverLight, it’s Microsoft’s “flash-killer” web tool.

Project Descry demonstrates the power of data and information visualization as a communication tool. As a part of Descry, we are releasing a set of open source, web-based visualizations and an article written by the Jon Udell that serves as a broad introduction to the topic.

On the Descry website they show 4 example visualizations:

  • “The Obesity Epidemic” – Show the obesity trend of every state in the US
  • “Their First Words” – explore the inaugural speech of every US president
  • “A Website named Desire” – a 100 megapixel digital poster with interactive annotations
  • “Social Timeline” – an interactive timeline of your friends from FriendFeed
